Tartarus Deep (タルタロス海淵), also known as Depro Deep, is one of the Seven Seas and the third stage in The Ocean Hunter. On the in-game map, this is the North Atlantic Ocean, somewhere within the area around Bermuda.

Overview[]

Tartarus Deep journal entry

This deep and dark saltwater ocean has many deep underwater terrains and caves, including a submarine sea route. There have been many underwater operations in this sea, although the intervention of Charybdis had destroyed most of them. At the time of the game, it is nighttime.

Climate[]

The temperatures at Tartarus Deep range from moderate to high (above surface) but slightly cold (below surface).

Etymology[]

In Greek mythology, Tartarus was both a primordial deity that existed before the Olympians, as well as a name to describe a region of the Underworld. As a god, he was third in rank after Chaos and Gaea, preceding Eros. He was also the father, by Gaia, of the monster Typhon.

As a place, it was far below than where Hades resided and it was used as the most horrible prison. Some accounts say that the distance between Tartarus and Hades was the same as between the earth and the heaven. Although the kingdom of Hades was the place of the dead, Tartarus was where ferocious monsters and horrible criminals were banished, or where the gods imprisoned their rivals after a war. The three judges of the Underworld, Rhadamanthus, Aeacus and Minos, decided who would go to the realm of Hades and who would be banished to Tartarus.

Trivia[]

  • The stage's theme songs are Tartarus Deep - Act 1 and Tartarus Deep - Act 2.
  • The stage is referred to in the game files as "Deep Sea" for the first half when Torel and Chris descend from their aeroship on a platform, and "Sea Cave" for the second half when the two leave the platform.
  • The lanternfish, one of the common enemies, in real life is much smaller than its in-game version.
  • Before the players encounter Naga, there is a strange mural by the cavern entrance, which depicts soldiers of presumably different factions fighting each other outside a temple with an one-eyed monstrous head perched on the roof.
