The Hydra (ハイドラ) is a monster consisting of three moray eels in The Ocean Hunter. The three eels are collectively the only sub boss in Luna Sea.

The Ocean Hunter[]

Before reaching the underwater ruins where the Leviathan is rumored to roam, a diver towing a treasure chest warns Torel and Chris of the danger ahead ("Danger here!"). Shortly after, the two adventurers are attacked by the aforementioned danger in the form of Hydra.

Gameplay[1][]

Sunburst Area/Vulnerable Area: Entire body
Sweet Spot/Weakpoint: Mouth (open)

After the player is introduced to the Hydra, they will begin to rotate between the three eels, which will attempt to bite the player. The player must continuously fire at the Hydra to rotate to the next one, and vice versa. The Hydra will be defeated once the player has depleted all three eels' health bars.

Etymology[]

'Hydra, also known as the Lernaean Hydra or Hydra of Lerna, refers to the nine-headed aquatic serpent from Greek mythology. The monster haunts the swamps of Lerna and is reputed to have guarded the entrance to the Underworld. It had poisonous blood and a venom so virulent that even its scent was deadly. If one of its heads was sliced off, it would be replaced by two more heads. The Hydra was killed by Hercules as one of his twelve labors and the method of killing it varies on different versions of the myth.

Trivia[]

  • The Hydra sub-boss fight is referred to in the game files as "Moray Fight".
  • It is unknown whether the Hydra is three individual animals, like Kerberos, or if the eels are connected to the same, unseen body, like the Hydra in the original myths.
